On 8th September between 9.30am and 11am, a cleanliness campaign with 116 students of Grade X from Vikhe Patil Memorial School, Pune was held at Platform No. 1 of the Pune Railway Station. To attract the crowds, a Zumba performance was conducted, with assistance from Ms Nisha Pandey and her team of Zumba instructors followed by a street play or ‘Nukkad Natak’ by the students. The theme of the ‘Nukkad Natak’ was overall protection of the environment which includes anti-littering and spitting, non-usage of plastic and the adverse impact of the same. An oath was also administered in Hindi to all those present to keep their surroundings clean. The students also interacted with passengers, vendors, porters and other railway patrons available during that time and distributed stickers exhorting the passersby to refrain from damaging railway property and the environment in general.
Under the aegis of the Swacchata Pakhwada of the Central Board of Secondary Education, this was a novel initiative carried out by Vikhe Patil Memorial School, Pune, under the adept guidance of Principal Mrinalini Bhosale. The objective was to disseminate information and create awareness regarding cleanliness. A couple of senior Railway officials were present to witness the event along with the teachers of Vikhe Patil Memorial School. The ‘Sare Jahan Se Acha’ Foundation, headed by its dynamic director Mr. Raja N helped to organise the event. The school firmly believes that even if a few people contribute their mite and pledge to keep their surroundings clean, this thought will reach the community and then the society at large and very soon our nation will become cleaner and greener.
