Swachh Bharat – Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign
‘एक कदम स्वछ्ता की ओर’
The Swachata campaign, or the cleanliness drive had a head start in Vikhe Patil Memorial School , Pune on October 1st 2014, which witnessed a massive drive by school children, teachers and staff, to create an awareness of importance of cleanliness and hygiene. Approximately Eighteen hundred students actively participated in this drive.
The morning assembly began with views of Gandhiji on cleanliness. The thought for the day “ Cleanliness is next to godliness” was elaborated, and students presented their views on importance of cleanliness and the steps one should take as responsible citizens to make a cleaner India. Students presented a skit to create awareness of waste management. The importance of three Rs, Reduce, Recycle and Reuse, in creating a better environment was discussed. Through group songs, students presented the dos and don’ts when it comes to handling trash, and personal hygiene. Students took a pledge to devote at least 2 hrs per week in cleaning their homes, society, neighbourhood, school etc.
Personally, it becomes a mission, but together, it becomes a movement. All students were given the task of cleaning the school, in all possible ways. Students were very enthusiastic to clean their desks, sitting areas, classrooms, cupboard, removal of cobwebs and dust from walls, maintenance of display boards in class, cleaning of laboratories and libraries, corridors, staircases window panes and doors. It was a good experience for them and they enjoyed playing their role in maintaining a clean school and being the change which they want to see in the world.
After cleaning, the students of Std. I-III also decorated the building with marigold flowers. A beautiful flower decoration (rangoli) was made on the ground floor by our Std III students guided by our art teacher Rizwana Ma’am and the class teacher of III B, Priya Ma’am. All the other teachers too participated spontaneously in the drive.
Though it was our first step towards a clean India, it has paved the way for consistent efforts in future and taking bigger initiatives and campaigns to create a clean and green India.
