A visit was organized on 23rd January 2014 to Volkswagen Pune Plant. The company is spread over 572 acres in Chakan.
Mr.Chaitnya Halbe Assitant Manager ,Group Communications guided students during the plant tour. The company manufactures car models such as Vento , Ameo and Polo . The paint prepared for cars undergo eleven stages therefore they are anti corrosive and stone chip resistant. The frame is submerged in paint tank to get high corrosion resistance and high quality surface coating.
The facility uses futuristically designed state-of-the-art equipment. The body shop uses Diode Laser Brazing technology, whereas laser technology is used for welding roof to body of the car. The facility is also one of the few environment-friendly manufacturing plants across the area. For example, the exhaust of the paint shop is re-burnt and the resultant heat energy is reused. One of the specialties of car models is absence of rubber packing for car doors. The whole assembly line consists of robotic use.
It is the most modern plant and has high level of vertical integration. Facility is the only production plant operated by a German automaker in India that covers entire production process, from press shop through body shop and paint shop to final assembly. Car models are tested in Destruction test room to check whether the model qualifies company’s quality and safety standards.
The visit was very useful as there was an opportunity to see modern manufacturing process of a leading automobile manufacturer.
