Industrial Visit to Serum Institute of India
The visit was organized on 22nd September 2017.Serum Institute of India produces immunobiological drugs. The company is managed by the Poonawalla group and owned by Cyrus Poonawalla. It was founded by Poonawalla in 1966.
The visit was approved and organized by Mr.Parminder Dureja, Additional Director-Serum Institute of India.
Serum Institute is equipped with modern laboratories with high-tech machinery and computerized equipment. The production facilities are continuously upgraded to ensure compliance with cGMP regulations and BSL-2 and BSL-2+ standards. The company has robotic arm for virus handling, cell factory. Screeners are employed to inspect products for any minute particulate matter undetectable to the normal eye. Configured with high resolution CCD cameras and electronic controlled panel, the inspection is done fully automatically. This reduces margins of human errors. Serum Institute has capacity to produce vaccines in more than one plant so that large number of doses in the shortest time frame can be produced. This enables the Institute to have a quick response time to cater to any international emergency or outbreak. There are sophisticated tunnel systems, high speed vial washing, filling, stoppering and sealing machines which run at a speed of 500 containers per minute. They have filling accuracy to the third digit.
Serum Institute’s quality team has developed systems to ensure that quality is built into the process that leads to consistency of output. There are regular trainings of Production experts and FDA approved Testing experts through continuous professional development. Experts are also regularly sent for training to USA, UK, France and Netherlands. This helps to ensure that the latest advances in production and quality testing standards are quickly incorporated in their processes. There are periodic inspections of facilities and product approvals obtained from the World Health Organization, National and International regulatory authorities for quality.
Serum Institute of India is largest producer of vaccine in the world. The company is in the process of developing an intra-nasal swine flu vaccine. Presently it has invented a fast-acting anti-rabies agent, Rabies Human Monoclonal Antibody. The company also produces Polio vaccine as well as Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Hib, BCG, r-Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccines. Around 65% of the children in the world receive at least one vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute. The vaccines are accredited by the World Health Organization, Geneva. These vaccines are used in around 170 countries in their national immunization programs and save millions of lives throughout the world.
The aim of producing life-saving immuno-biologicals was to avoid shortage and high prices of imports. So these were manufactured in large quantity at affordable prices. Tetanus Anti-toxin and Anti-Snake Venom serum, Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis, Measles, Mumps and Rubella are the vaccines produced here. Because of this not only Indians’ but the entire under-privileged children of the world are protected since their birth onwards.
Thus it was a very fruitful visit to India’s No.1 Biotechnology company. Prof.Vijay Deshmukh , Prof.Devkumar Mahisekar and students of M.B.A.I were present for the visit.
