Global Green School Award

Vikhe Patil Memorial School has won the prestigious international ‘ Global Green School Stewardship Award-2017’ for their initiative towards Green school and sustained dedication and commitment towards protecting the environment. This award will be presented to them during climate week NYC at New York on 22nd September, 2017.

The Green School Initiative ( GSI) is a non -profit organization based in India transforming conventional schools into green schools in India , UAE and USA. GSI promotes the sustainable practices in the field of education through resources auditing, curriculum, mentoring, solutions and certifications to the schools and Universities worldwide.

The objective of the green school program is to encourage students to inspect and do the survey of the school with regard to the environmental practices. Under this program the students were required to form teams and go around the school on an exploratory journey and make notes on the basis of their observations in relation to the water, energy, land, air and waste in the school and the way the school manages these issues.

VPMS has designed a comprehensive program to deal with the environmental issues. The school focused on educating the students about environmental stewardship and civic responsibility. All the activities in this regard were carried out under the able guidance of the Principal, Mrs. Mrinalini Bhosale and an in-charge teacher of the ECO club, Mrs. Nidhi Jain.

The school promotes and conducts various workshops on recycling waste, debates on the environmental challenges with regular focus on inculcating cleaner habits amongst children. VPMS is chosen for adopting the most innovative and effective practices to manage natural resources on its premises. Additionally, it is in recognition of the environment-friendly features incorporated in the school such as auto shut, low-flow taps, eco-friendly paints, use of CFL bulbs and use of natural light and ventilation in classrooms.

When contacted the principal of the school, Mrs. B. Mrinalini/ Chairman of the Trust, Dr. Ashok Vikhe Patil said, “The school has been working on water management, lighting, air quality and waste management, apart from expanding greenery. We are planning to have an efficient gray water recycling system, carpooling, harvesting of daylight to classrooms through techniques such as sun pipes, solar bottler bulb and renovating the roof with sky lights, apart from the introduction of rooftop gardens. Another important aspect are the upcoming initiatives of the Swachhagrah Dal members – an association formed by students in accordance with the Swachhagrah campaign, which is already functioning.”
