Club and Month End Activities – July and August 2014

July

1.Ramanujans

Name of the activity : Puzzles solving and a talk by Mrs. Rema Menon

Maths puzzles and riddles were taken up in the first half of the session. Raghav of Std XI and Jaydeep of Std X discussed some of their puzzles.

Mrs Rema Menon a retired bank officer explained the meaning and working of the bank. She gave examples of various accounts and schemes available in the bank. Details of the cheque and Demand draft were also explained. She shared her experience of a robbery happened in her branch and the consequences of it. The members enjoyed the session and participated actively.

2.Space and Astronomy

Name of the Activity : Questionnaire solving and making rockets

The session started with students working in a group to answer a questionnaire prepared by Mr Amit Purandhare based on Astronomy and the astronomical terms. After a span of 20 minutes the answers were discussed along with explanation by Mr Purandhare for every answer.

In the latter session the students were made to work in groups wherein they worked on making of Rockets, aliens, imaginary planets and logos for the rockets. This activity saw creative members who initially brainstormed and then compiled the work together using diverse resources like cardboards, chart paper, plastic bottles etc.

3.Cyber Master

Name of the Activity :

The agenda for the day was ‘Basics of Film Editing’ for which, a resource person, Mr Avinash Vasu was invited. Mr Vasu, who was an ex Vikheite, had majored in Film Making with a special minor in Psychology and has received a Gold Medal in Filmmaking in his graduating batch. The students were happy to know that he was successful enough to set up his own Production House called Erango Media and has 32 short films to his credit and that his film ‘Lost and Found’ was also screened in the Cannes Film Festival. The differences between ‘screen time’ and ‘real time’ were explained.A scene from the Hollywood film, ‘The Untouchables’ was shown. The students had to identify where the shots were cut, what ‘seamless’ editing meant.

4. E Club

Name of the Activity : Logo making

The 2nd activity planned for students was hands-on practice on designing logos.

In the 1st half, the students were given presentation on how to group different geometric shapes and use them as one single. How to rotate it, colour it and change its location. The students could generate exact copy of that logo.

In the 2nd half, students were shown a video and demonstrated on how to convert text into shape (like b into a snail ) . They were asked to follow the steps given in the video.

Using the same technique, they created butterfly using B, ear phones using C and Giraffe using h. Thus, students enjoyed the activity where they got a chance to use their creativity and logic.

4.Robotics

Name of the activity :

1. To make working model of a hover craft using simple material

2. To make the circuit of a J.C.B robot and use it to activate the robot.

In the first half the working of the hovercraft was explained and a working model was made by each child.In the second half the working of the circuit use din a J.C.B was explained and students could partly complete the circuit which will be continued in the next session.

Student were all excited with the hovercrafts they made and were very keen to know about the robot. Both the sessions were very interesting and informative.

5.Eureka

Name of the Activity: Weigh the weights

The second session of Eureka started with a short lecture on difference between mass and weight, beam balance and spring balance, principle of spring balance- Hook’s law, and elasticity.

Students carried out an experiment to study the relation between weight and downward extension of a given spring, and found the spring constant. The significance of spring constant was discussed. Students then made their own spring balance using the materials given to them. The first step was to find the elastic constant of the given material, and the second step was to calibrate the scale. Students got hands on experience in calibrating a scale , choosing their own least count and hence choosing the precision of their weighing scale.

6.Little Chefs

Name of the Activity: Nutritious Sandwich The Little Chefs on Saturday, 19th July made a Nutritious Sandwich. The Sandwich was made using Brown Bread supposed to be more nutritional. The filling for the sandwich comprised of cabbage,capsicum, carrots, cucumber and onions mixed with Mayonaise and Paneer. To add to the taste of the filling, salt, pepper and some mustard paste was added. The students were then taught how to butter a slice of bread. Following this, they assembled a sandwich for themselves. The activity was meant to expose the student to a very common and regular life skill.

7.Adventure Club

Name of the Activity : Artificial wall climbing

Activity for the month was conducted at the Artificial Wall at Shivaji Vyayam Mandal, Shivaji Nagar, Pune. All the children were called at the venue at 6.30am. After the introduction to the equipment and the safety precautions the activity in charge Master Amol started the activity. One of their students gave demonstration and then our student started doing it. There were 79 students including girls, and all of them tried and did it successfully without any injury.

8. Club: Tout a’ la mode

Name of the Activity :To enable students to learn Chain stitch, Stem stitch and their applications.

few students, first, continued with the Hem stitch which was taught to them in the previous session.

For the ones who had completed the previous assignment, Chain stitch was demonstrated. The students were asked to draw a straight line on the fabric and practice the Chain stitch.

Once done, the Stem stitch was demonstrated. Here, the students were encouraged to draw floral designs and practice the stitch.

A few students, specially from the middle school, learnt“ patience “ and “concentration” as they managed tangled threads and threading the needle.

At the end of the session, the ones with a fine hand were able to fill a petal or two with Stem stitch. ( photo graphs attached )

9. साहित्यिक मस्ती

विषय :- वारली चित्रकला व शिल्पकला यांची भाषा

वक्ते :- श्री. धनंजय राव.

सुरुवातीला प्रथमेश नाईक याने पाहुण्यांची ओळख करून दिली. त्यानंतर सरांनी वारली चित्रकलेचा पाया काय आहे ते सांगितले. पूर्वीच्या काळी चित्रांद्वारेमाणूस आपले विचार कसे व्यक्त करीत असे हे सांगितले. नंतरविद्यार्थ्यांनी स्वतः वारली चित्रे काढली. सरांनी चित्रांचे स्पष्टीकरण दिले की कसे आपले चित्र आपल्या मनातले विचार व भावना सांगतात.

दुसऱ्या सत्रात सरांनी शाडूच्या मातीपासून शिल्पकला कशी करतात याचेप्रात्यक्षिक दाखवले. नंतरविद्यार्थ्यांना माती देऊन त्यांच्याकडून शिल्पे बनवून घेतली. यावेळी विद्यार्थ्यांनी स्वतःची कल्पनाशक्ती वापरून वेगवेगळी शिल्पे बनवली, जसे स्नोमॅन, वडापाव, क्रिकेटचे मैदान त्या खेळाच्या साहित्यासह, फुलपाखरू इ. विद्यार्थ्यांनी मातीत हात घालून काहीतरी स्वतः बनविण्याचा आनंद घेतला.

सरांनी शिल्पकलेतून देखील बनवणाऱ्या माणसाचीमानसिकताकशीओळखू शकतो हे सांगितले. विद्यार्थी माती घरी घेऊन गेले व त्यांना हे आवर्जून सांगण्यात आले की घरी देखील सतत वेगवेगळ्या कलाकृती बनवत रहा.

10. Human Matrix

Name of the activity: To sensitize the students towards people living in slums and also exhibiting mental illnesses.

The students(39 in no.) of Human Matrix club along with 6 teachers had gone for a NGO visit. The NGO – BapuTrust is an organization that aspires to provide services in the field of mental health in the communities at large. The services come in the form of advocacy, referrals and education of the neighborhood in dealing with issues related to mental health. BapuTrust works in the field of mental health in two communities namely,

Lohianagar Basti and

Kashewadi Basti

On reaching the organization Ms. Kavitha oriented us about the 2 hour program. The students were divided into groups of seven and each group was accompanied by a teacher and a field worker from the institution for the community visit.

Towards the end of the discussion many commonly held misconceptions about slum dwellers as well as people with mental disability were at the least challenged. Many of them were moved by the interaction with a teenager from the slum. They did notice not just the struggles they go through but how our own interactions and attitudes about them are highly skewed.

12. The Gourmet Central club

Name of the activity : Field trip

The Gourmet central club had arranged a field trip to the Pastry Corner .The students left for the venue at 8.15 am. After reaching the venue the students were given a demonstration of the mango cream pastry and stuffed bread rolls. Then they were taken on a round of the bakery in groups of ten each. They were shown the kitchen, the baking section, the printed cake section and then to the shop.

13. Film Appreciation

Name of the activity : Guest lecture by Mr Sohil Vaidya on film making and editing

For the July session, the budding short film maker and director Mr. Sohil Vaidya was invited to deliver a talk on ‘ Filmaking and Editing’. He himself made some short films which were screened at the international film festival. Three short films were shown to the students to highlight the importance of Editing in filmmaking. The technical aspects of the filmmaking were explained in a simplified way. The session was very interactive.


August

1.Ramanujan

Activity : Patterns and recreational Mathematics

Patterns and recreational Mathematics were the topics for the club activity. There are many ways to construct magic squares, but the standard (and most simple) way is to follow certain configurations/formulas which generate regular patterns.Pascal’s Triangle was taken up in the second session. Pascal’s triangle is a triangular array of the binomial coefficients. It is named after the French mathematician Blaise Pascal.

2.Astronomy

Activity : Presentation

In the first session of the activity various groups of students named Jupiter, Saturn etc. have continued with their projects work of making models of planets, logos for the space shuttles, space shuttles etc. In the second session of the activity after the presentation of Anirudh Karnik and sarthak Kapoor on “mission red Planet” ,space probes sent to mars, future mission o mars each group has put up a small presentation of their work which was very interesting and innovative .

3.Cyber Master

Activity : Quiz

As part of the Club activities, a cyber quiz named ‘Inquisitech’ was organised for the students of the Cyber Masters Club. This quiz was conducted by an ex student Krunaal Tavkar. The quiz was very informative and the students enjoyed the proceedings immensely.

4.Robotics

Activity : Pick Up and Place Robot

The students had started working on the ‘Pick Up and Place Robot’ in the last session in July. In the last session they had made the remote for the robot. In this session, they worked on the robot itself. The Pick Up and Place Robot could pick up the objects, move them to another place and place it there.

5.Eureka

Activity: Crystal Magic

The dazzling beauty and unique shape of crystals have amazed people time and again. However, behind the ordered arrangement of atoms and molecules, there is a serious chemistry, which makes every crystal unique. In the third session of club activity, students explored the type and nature of crystal by carrying out crystal growth themselves. They were introduced to the chemistry behind crystals, and the properties of crystals. The Students were excited to observe that Copper Sulphate crystals were formed in triclinic shape whereas potash alum comes out in octahedral geometry.

6. Human Matrix

Activity : To get perspective of various social behaviors in groups

Next activity was the bidding activity where to lay claim to 50 lakh rupees, they had to bid. The bidding was either an X (bidding on others accomplishments) or a Y (bidding on own accomplishments). Important discussions about group dynamics, intergroup conflict and losing the bigger picture. Asch’s conformity experiment about ways in which peer pressure works many a times in subtle ways were discussed. Social Identity theory which states that group memberships form a part of our identity and hence we act in ways that makes our groups better than others. One of the main take away was how each one of us has a capacity for both good and evil and it is our choice that will make us either a hero or a devil and how that can be done. One of the main take away of the session was how in many subtle ways the situation or the group can have a strong influence on us. The only way to avoid this is by being aware and reflecting on our choice during various social interactions.

Adventure club

Activity :

Activity for the month was conducted at the Kameth Adventures at village Dahuli near Kanhe Phata. This is the third year that our students went to the spot and enjoyed it. Mr. Rajesh Pathade spoke to the children and explained to them about the safety in mountaineering activity and also about how to gain confidence while doing this type of activity.

8..साहित्यिक मस्ती

विषय :- नाटक व नाट्यछटा

कल्याणी पाटील या विद्यार्थिनीच्या नाट्यछटा सादरीकरणाने क्लबची सुरुवात झाली. तिने ‘ती फुलराणी’ या नाटकातील एक प्रसंग साभिनय सादर केला. बाकीच्या विद्यार्थ्यांनी तिला भरभरून प्रतिसाद दिला. त्यानंतर‘आईशप्पथ’ हेदोन अंकीधमाल बालनाट्य विद्यार्थ्यांनादाखविण्यात आले. त्याद्वारे त्यांना अभिनयाचे व संवाद सादरीकरणाचे ज्ञान मिळाले. नाटकाद्वारेत्यांच्यात ‘पालकांचे आपल्या जीवनातील स्थान’ याविषयाची संवेदनशीलता जागृत झाली. कोणतेही यंत्र हे मानवी भावना व पालकांचे निर्व्याज प्रेम, यांना पर्याय असू शकत नाही, या मूल्य संस्काराची जाणीवआपोआपच या नाटिकेद्वारे झाली.विद्यार्थ्यांना नाटक मनापासून आवडले व त्यांनी चांगल्या प्रतिक्रिया दिल्या. पुढील भागातविद्यार्थ्यांनानाट्यछटांची पुस्तके देण्यात आली. त्यांनी स्वतः त्यातील काही नाट्यछटानिवडल्या व वाचल्या. पुढे त्या सदर कशा कराव्यात याचे मार्गदर्शन त्यांना करण्यात आले. अभिनयाचे प्रकार जसे‘ आंगिक, आहार्य, वाचिक, सात्विक’ व त्यांचे नाटकातील महत्त्व याविषयीचे मार्गदर्शन विद्यार्थ्यांना सौ. मंजिरी शहाणे यांनी केले.

9.Tout ala Mode

Group 1 , comprising of students from the Middle school learnt the Blanket stitch which is used for button holes and patch work. A majority of them were able to first practice , gain confidence and then , moved on to apply the same on floral motifs.

Group 2, which includes the senior students , tried their hands at patch work and shadow work. A few of them progressed towards filling  teddy bears, roses and other designs with the newly acquired skills of different stitches.

10. Film Appreciation

In the last session the resource person explained many technical aspects of the film to the students.  They were shown a film called ‘ Now you see it’  in this session the students were asked to Keep all these aspects  in mind while watching this film. This film was based on magic and magicians. How illusions are different than the real life experiences. It was a captivating film and was technically very sound. After the film was over, students were asked to comment on it. They spoke about the time and space relation , the camera work and characterization.

Std. I

Show and Tell

The students of Std I had Show and Tell as the month end activity for the month of August. The competition was conducted on 28th August 2014.Students were given the topics in advance to prepare for the activity. Each child was expected to participate in the activity.The main objective of this activity was to develop students listening and speaking skills and confident level. Many students spoke very well which helped teachers to identify their inner speaking talents through this activity. Students accomplished the activity with fun, pleasure and they enjoyed it with total enthusiasm.

Std. II

Origami

Std II –Month End Activity Report for August 2014

The Month End Activity for August 2014 for the students of Class II was Origami. The activity was conducted on Thursday, 28th August 2014. The topic given for Origami was Rainy Season and students were asked to make things related to it and paste the models made on a drawing sheet, using that as the background. The objective of the activity was to develop the motor skills of the students and enhance their creative side. Students came up with some new and creative Origami figures. Students of all the four sections enjoyed doing the activity.

Std III

The month-end activity for Standard III was conducted on Thursday, 28.08.2014 during the first two periods of school. The activity was mask-making where the students made a wide variety of animal masks. The materials that were used to make the same were brought by the children from home.  They used a variety of material like paper plates, cardboard, coloured paper, cotton, colours, string, decoration materials of different kinds, glue etc.  for the activity.  The children had an opportunity to exhibit their creativity and thoroughly enjoyed the activity.  The students’ creations were displayed in the classroom with a message on how to protect and save animals.

Std IV

Std V

Students of Std V had salad making as a month end activity on 28th August. Students were instructed by the teachers to bring cut vegetables, sprouts, fruits, other ingredients and utensils which they require for making salad. This activity was conducted in all Std V classes respectively in the 5th and 6th period. Students eagerly waited for 5th period to come. They enjoyed this activity very much. Each one came out with different salad, unique in itself. They shared their salads with each other and had a great time.

Std VI

On 27th of August 2014 students of standard VI A,B,C and D participated in the Rangoli making activity. Each class was represented by 4 groups with 10 students in each group. Students used various materials like colors, cereals, grain, flowers lamps etc to decorate their themes that ranged from historical chracters to designs and nature to comic characters. Lots of enthusiasm was seen in boys and girls and they took their task to completion wit maximum interest and perfection with he given alloted time.

Std. VII

clay Moulding/chalk/candle carving competition

REPORT OF THE MONTH END ACTIVITY STD VII

As the month end activity for August, clay Moulding/chalk/candle carving competition was organized in the respective classes of standard 7. It was an individual activity. The students participated with great enthusiasm, made beautiful articles and enjoyed the activity.

Std. VIII

Making Greeting Card

As a month end activity for the month of August students of std.8 made Greeting cards.Greeting cards were made for Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, New Year, Birthday,Rakhi etc. Students were excited to make different types of Greeting Cards. They showed creativity in different ways. They made cards using quilling, waste material, paints etc. Everybody participated in the activity. Some of the Greeting cards were selected from each section and they were displayed on the soft board of the class. Some students made cards for their parents, brothers and sisters. When parents came for the month end meeting some of the students gave cards to their parents. Parents were very happy to see their child‘s creativity and talent.

Std. IX

Cyber Smart Programme

The month end activity for std IX and std X was Cyber Smart Programme which was held on 28th August 2014. Mr. Ashley Eates from Asian School of Cyber Laws conducted the session from 10.20 to 11.40am in the AV room.

In these modern times the use of internet is unavoidable and essential. But it is not free from challenges and it is not free from crimes. If the students are aware of this, then they will be able to use the internet in a safe and productive way.

Mr. Eates made the students aware of various crimes and the misuse of information that is posted on social networking sites like facebook etc. He made them aware of the fact that once anything is posted on the internet, it never goes away. One should be careful about setting up the strong passwords, not sharing any personal details in the chat rooms etc. Hence one should be careful about their digital footprints and trusting strangers and sharing personal information over the internet. He also explained it to the students that the part of the internet that we see and can access is only 1/8th of it and the rest of it is hidden. Hence one has to take all the necessary precautions.

The objective of his organization is to make every school a ‘cyber smart school’.  If 200 students of a school become cyber smart by clearing various levels of his free cyber smart challenge then the school is declared a cyber smart school.

It was an enriching session which the students enjoyed and learnt a lot from it.

A. Month End Activities – June 2014

Std : I& II

Activity : Clay Modeling

Topic : Fruits / Vegetables /Animals

The students were very excited as they opened their boxes of colourful clay and like creative artists began on a journey of pinching, rolling, shaping, and moulding the wet clay. The students took pride in the fact that they were able to make beautiful fruits and vegetables on their own. They realized through this clay modeling activity that each of their action has a reaction that shapes the possible outcomes. It was also a good exercise for the motor development of their fingers.

Std. III

Activity :Newspaper Bag Making

This activity was planned in order to popularise paper bags as well as to encourage students to make their own bags which would eventually reduce the usage of plastic bags.

Children expressed themselves in a number of innovative ways. They used glitters, colour pencils, ribbons and stickers to decorate their paper bags. Some of them also wrote messages like ‘Go Green’, ‘Save your Planet’ on their bags!

Std. IV

Activity :Movie review “Rio”

Animated movies have always attracted the attention and interest of kids and a movie review is a unique way to express ones thoughts.Std IV was shown a thought-provoking animated movie ‘Rio’. The students were divided into groups. Each group was told to discuss, prepare and share the review in which they mentioned their likes, dislikes and most importantly the values that they learnt through the movie.

Class V

Activity: Best out of Waste

The children of class V came to school all enthused to go ahead with this activity. They unleashed their creativity and the results were truly spellbinding. These young minds came up with a variety of waste material which was carefully reused to make some pretty candle stands, penholders, photo frames made from old CDs, jewellery boxes for their mothers, decorative articles for the home and the show stopper item of the day was a working model of a night lamp made from used plastic spoons.

Std. VI

Activity :Greeting Card Making

The month end activity was Greeting Card making. Students were at their creative best where along with their creative minds, their magic hands too were working exceptionally well. They had used pieces of old wedding cards, quilling paper, sequences etc to enhance the appearance of their cards. The students enjoyed doing the activity and put in their best.

Std. VII

Activity : Talent Search

The Month end activity was ‘Talent Search’. The objective for conducting this activity was to provide a platform to the students for show- casing their talents. They were seated in their groups according to their items. Variety of items like skits, mono acting, singing, magic shows and dances were presented.

STD VIII

Activity :Flower Arrangement

As a part of the month-end activity, the students of STD VIII actively took part in a skillful and creative arrangement of flowers to make their work look presentable. The students were encouraged to make paper flowers instead of getting the real flowers. the students made beautiful designs and bouquets from cut flowers, foliage, ornamental grass and other plant material from the garden as well as flowers bought.

Std. IX and X

Activity :Salad, sandwich and mocktail making

A variety of activities were planned for the students of Std IX, for the month of June. Std IX students were given 45 minutes for preparation and display of their items. Salad Making, Sandwich making and Mock tail preparation activities were conducted . Menu card making, greeting card making and flower arrangement activities were also conducted .

Std. XI and XII

Activity: IT Quiz

The month end activity for the month of June for class 11th and 12th was a technology quiz, created, organized, and hosted by one of our ex-students, Krunaal Tavkar.. The quiz was thorough packed with good information and research.
